The Canon EOS 40D is a 10.1-megapixel semi-professional digital single-lens reflex camera. It was initially announced on August 20, 2007 and was released at the end of that month. It is the successor of the Canon EOS 30D, and is succeeded by the EOS 50D.[1] It can accept EF and EF-S lenses. Like its predecessor, it uses an APS-C sized image sensor, resulting in a 1.6x field of view crop factor.
Color
To test the color accuracy of the 40D, we set the camera to Faithful and photographed an industry standard GretagMacbeth ColorChecker test chart. The ColorChecker chart consists of 24 color tiles that represent colors from around the color spectrum. We determine color accuracy by comparing the colors the camera reproduces with the known colors of the test chart. The image below shows these colors side by side. The outside squares show the colors the camera reproduces, the inside squares show the ideal colors of the chart corrected for luminance, and the inner rectangles are the ideal chart colors at a perfectly even exposure.
Who Doesn't Need to Splurge for the Canon 40D SLR
Most of these questions leave the average consumer stumped. I showed my wife these questions and she thought I was working on a math problem.
These questions are about the feature differences between Canon’s EOS models, the Rebel XSi and 40D.
Does the average consumer camera user need the 40D? Not really. Yes, it has more features and is geared more to the prosumer with more than just a passing hobby in photography but I certainly would not dish out the extra $500 dollars for features that someone like my wife would never use.

Who Will Love the Canon EOS 40D
Now on to the good stuff.

The 40D is a fun, not too technical digital SLR that someone heavily into photography could really have a blast using. The camera felt comfortable in my hands (not too bulky nor heavy) with a very easy menu navigation and large three inch LCD monitor.

Canon’s new autofocus system is impressive, with 9 cross type sensors. The 40D incorporates Canon’s new diagonal high precision cross sensors for faster, more accurate focusing.

This will come in very handy when you’re shooting subjects that are on the move and shooting fast subjects won’t be an issue with the top shutter speeds of 1/8000. Also, the 40D has a burst rate of up to 75 consecutive JPEGS or, for you photographers that love the extra work, 17 consecutive in RAW.

The feature a lot of prosumer photographers will love is the 40D’s CMOS sensor. This is the same technology that was used in the Canon’s EOS-1D Mark III camera (read Canon’s really cool, expensive pro camera). That means the sensor is giving you a better tonal range and clarity in every shot while reducing noise.

Bottom Line on the Canon EOS 40D Digital SLR
An amateur or casual hobbyist will not want this camera, but a prosumer seeking out a digital SLR camera will be happy with some of the advanced features and the dazzling images produced by the Canon EOS 40D digital SLR camera. It also provides a nice and impressive option for those who can't afford some of the higher-end Canon professional SLR cameras.
Improvements
Changes over the 30D include a higher-resolution sensor (10.1 megapixel instead of 8.2). The sensor also has better noise control than previous models. The 40D has a larger memory buffer so more pictures can be written at a faster pace. Frames per second has been increased from 5 to 6.5.

The 40D adds a new format, Canon's sRAW, which is a smaller RAW image for smaller prints and reduced file sizes. The 40D's RAW format is 14-bit instead of the 12-bit of the 30D.

The camera uses the new DiG!C III image processor, which was first used in the Canon EOS-1D Mark III, introduced earlier that year. Canon’s DiG!C III processor delivers responsive operation, improved color rendering and near-instant start-up time.A new sensor cleaning system has been introduced. It can also use the Canon Wireless File Transmitter WFT-E3/E3A.

The 40D has a larger screen (3", of the same resolution) than the 30D (2.5") and 20D (1.8"). There is also a new menu for external and internal flash control, including second curtain sync.

Other additions on the Canon 40D include interchangeable focusing screens, a much-needed AF-ON button, the EOS Integrated Cleaning System for sensor dust reduction, and three new optional accessories: an IS version of the 18-55mm kit lens; a new backward-compatible, live view mode, and a weather-sealed battery grip.
Overview & Features
The 40D has many similar characteristics to its predecessors the 20D and 30D. This includes various shooting modes, ability to change ISO and white balance, a pop-up flash unit, and an LCD screen. The LCD screen is larger than the previous models (3.0" from 2.5" previously).
The 40D has more megapixels, and the resolution sizes are slightly higher than the 20D and 30D. Its RAW format is 14-bit.
A new feature is Live View, which allows photographers to use the LCD screen as the viewfinder. The shutter noise is quieter in this mode.
